Adobe Systems, Inc. logo and wordmark.Adobe Trivia: Illustrator and Photoshop are siblings, with Illustrator being the big sister and Photoshop the little brother (Illustrator was a 1987 Adobe creation/release with Botticelli's Venus as it's icon (female) and Photoshop as an acquisition by the Knoll brothers (Thomas & John, both males) in the late 1980s. (Thomas Knoll is still involved with the development of Photoshop and John Knoll is Chief Creative Officer at Industrial Light & Magic for Lucasfilm, LTD.) Adobe thought Photoshop would be second to Illustrator, but they were mistaken – Photoshop took off and proved to be the more popular of the two applications due to it's unique capabilities in manipulating photographs (bitmap images). Both applications work extremely well together in being able to produce vector graphics & raster images (bitmaps) for artists, designers, photographers and other creatives around the world.

InDesign was the late comer into the Adobe family in 2000, an acquisition from Aldus in 1994 (formerly Aldus PageMaker, then Adobe PageMaker – aka RageMaker among designers and pre-press technicians due to the multiple work-arounds needed in order to print the digital files correctly) and is viewed as a baby sister to the two older siblings. Adobe released InDesign 2 in 2002 and in an interview with an Adobe representative I was asked what I thought of the new version (since version 1 had numerous issues). I excitedly answered, "It's Adobe Illustrator on page layout steroids!" InDesign has many of the same capabilities Illustrator does, with it's strength in being able to layout multi-page documents and process type (lots of type!) effortlessly.

Believe it or not!

Professor Randy's Fun Facts – inspirational Insights about digital imaging, illustration, print, computers & learning…

Working with a computer is like making art with a calculator and a Hasbro Lite-Brite.

White on a computer screen will be the color of the paper your imagery is printed on.

Inkjet printers do not have a white ink cartridge.

Pixels are square (older technology used rectangle pixels).

There's no such thing as a round digital image (or triangle, diamond, polygon, organic shapes, etc.) because pixels are square.

Digital images can be created in applications, scanners, cameras, devices, screen grabs & code.

Digital images have 3 basic properties in order to exist – physical dimension (width & height), resolution (pixels per inch or ppi) & color mode (RGB, CMYK, grayscale, bitmap, etc.).

Digital images may only have a single physical dimension, resolution & color mode at any given time, i.e., they can not have two different sizes, resolution or color modes in the same document.

Resolution is a term used for digital images (files), digital displays (monitors & devices) and printing. Pixels per inch (ppi) is used for digital images & displays, dots per inch (dpi, dots of ink per inch) and lines per inch (lpi, lines of halftone dots per inch) are used for printing.

Some digital images are resolution independent – they take on the resolution of the device they're displayed on and/or printed from. Adobe Illustrator images are usually resolution independent since they contain vectors (mathematically described objects). The exception is when digital images or raster effects (blurs, drop shadows, etc.) are included, which must have a resolution (300 ppi is recommended for commercial printing).

Bitmap (raster image) – an image made of pixels, a pixel grid.

Rasterize – to convert a digital file into pixels.

Vector (vector image) – a mathematically described object – i.e., an image drawn with paths (anchor points & segments). Vector based images are infinitely scalable – the main reason logos are created in Adobe Illustrator instead of Adobe Photoshop.

Hierarchy (levels, layers) – draw a line, then a circle, then paint – there's an order in which you create in the real-world. The same occurs in software – the first thing you create is on a level, the second thing is on the next next level up and so forth. This happens in Microsoft Word, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign & other apps. The hierarchy can be changed at any time in order to get your desired results.

Keep you gear clean – dirty monitors make retouching images a challenge – you don't know if it's dust in the image or on your screen. Keep camera lenses and scanners clean to avoid excess retouching.

Capitalize on your efforts – your chances of manually drawing multiple circles the exact same size are slim & none – if you created one, just duplicate it to get the job done.

If it exists, you can manipulate it – if you created a document, object, shape, color, style, technique, resource, etc., simply duplicate it and adjust as necessary to get the job done.

The goal is to work efficiently with a computer. When you find that you're using the same menu commands over and over to get the job done, see if there's a keyboard shortcut and start using it or write your own shortcut – many apps let you create custom keyboard shortcuts.

When you say to yourself, there must be a better way – there probably is – research it on the Interweb and see what others are doing.

There is no good/bad, right or wrong – it's all an experience.

Learning is a life long process – learn it, know it, live it.

Project Five

Typography (designing with type)

Due: October 24th

Concept: Create unique typographic examples in Adobe Illustrator.

Project Brief: Adobe Illustrator has a long history of being the go to application to create incredible typographic effects. Everything from type on paths to flowing text in unique shapes, decorative type to descriptive text and labels, Illustrator does it all. Be creative with Illustrator and make at least 3 unique typographic examples.

Specifications: RGB color, Raster Effects 300 ppi, Adobe Illustrator (ai) format

Tips and insight.
  • Getting Started – Typography is all around us – everywhere – really, everywhere. Appliances in our homes, books and magazines, websites, email, ads on TV, movie and show titles & end credits, digital displays, posters, billboards, packaging, and the list goes on and on. Start to carefully look at type examples to see how it was crafted – most likely, any fancy looking type you see was created in Adobe Illustrator.

  • Touch Type – Selecting Overlapping Letters: Manipulating type with the Type Touch option may make selecting overlapping text really challenging, especially if you scale some type larger and some smaller. The solution is to select the letter that is overlapping the others and causing the selection issue (i.e. the easy one to select), use the menu, Object > Arrange > Send to Back. Now you can select the smaller letter and continue transforming!
  • Kerning Types: metrics, optical & manual – kerning is the process of adjusting the space between any two characters (glyphs) in a font. The metrics option is the kerning the type designer designated when creating the font. Optical kerning was introduced in Adobe InDesign 2 in 2002 and looks at character shapes to adjust the space. Manual kerning is done by hand by the artist using Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop (see Kerning below).
  • Kerning – adjusting the space between pairs of characters (glyphs) to achieve a visual pleasing result. Use the Type tool and click between a pair of characters in your text, press Option (PC: Alt) and tap the left arrow key to decrease the space or the right arrow key to increase the space between characters. This works in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign & Photoshop.
  • Tracking – adjusting the space between multiple characters (glyphs) for uniform spacing in a word, sentence or paragraph(s). Highlight your desired text with the Type tool and press Option (PC: Alt) and tap the left arrow key to decrease the spaces or the right arrow key to increase the spaces between characters. This works in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign & Photoshop.

Brand marks
– logos, wordmarks & symbols are usually created in Adobe Illustrator as vector artwork so they can be reproduced at various sizes for print & digital display.

Project Six

Logo Design

Due: October 31st

Concept: Create a logo in Adobe Illustrator.

Project Brief: Corporate brand marks (symbols) and logotypes are usually created in Adobe Illustrator. This is due to Illustrator's resolution-independent output. Illustrator files can be infinitely scaled while maintaining sharpness! Create black, white, Pantone+ Solid Coated, RGB and CMYK versions of your brand mark.

Specifications: Create the following versions of your logo design and save your files in the Adobe Illustrator format (.ai).

  • Pantone+ Solid Coated – for brand identity & printing with limited inks
  • RGB Color – for digital display
  • CMYK Color – for 4-color printing
  • Black – for printing with black ink
  • White (also known as the knock-out version: as in knock-out to white, where white is the paper color) – for use over similar or competing color(s) to brand marks and/or visually complex backgrounds

Tips and insight.
  • Getting Started – Brand marks are all around us, on everything. Brand marks and branding have a long history, dating back to ancient Egypt to mark ownership of livestock. Branding has evolved over time to not only mark livestock, but to mark products, services, groups and individuals. Adobe Illustrator is usual application to create logos, due to the scalability of vector artwork (Adobe InDesign is also used to create logos as vector art. Design novices often create logos in Adobe Photoshop and quickly learn that bitmaps have limited scalability.). Start to carefully look at logos and see if you can figure out how it was crafted in Adobe Illustrator.
  • Design in Black (first) – Designers work with black only to begin their exploration in creating a brand mark to save time and get the design nailed down. The mark has to work with reproduction in a single ink, including white (paper color or a special opaque ink).
  • Design in Color (second) – Color exploration is the next step in brand mark design – usually a time consuming process selecting colors that best represent a corporation or individual. Color can evoke powerful emotional and psychological responses from humans and convey positive and negative values.

  • Pantone® – Pantone is the world-renowned authority on color and provider of color systems and leading technology for the selection and accurate communication of color across a variety of industries. Download the 2015 catalog and the 2019 catalog.
  • Create Outlines – After saving your master Illustrator file, convert all type to outlines before making the black, white and color versions. This will convert your typography to shapes and not require including the font(s) with your files. You can convert live type to outlines by selecting your type objects with the Selection tool and using the menu, Type > Create Outlines or Command+Shift+O (PC: Control+Shift+O).

Project Eight

Patterns & Brushes

Due: November 21st

Concept: Working with patterns and brushes in Adobe Illustrator.

Project Brief: Pattern tiles (repeating elements) can be produced in Adobe Illustrator by simply dragging objects, including photos, to the Swatches panel. Complex pattern tiles can be created by selecting multiple objects in your file and using the menu, Object > Pattern > Make – this will add the pattern swatch to the Swatches panel and invoke the Pattern Options dialog. Pattern tiles can be customized using the Pattern Options to create a variety of tiles. Pattern brushes can also be made from objects and pattern swatches to enhance your designs. Have fun working with patterns!

Adobe Illustrator also features a suite of brushes that let you stylize the appearance of paths. You can apply brush strokes to existing paths, or you can use the Paintbrush tool to draw a path and apply a brush stroke at the same time. Illustrator has five different types of brushes: calligraphic, scatter, art, pattern, and bristle. Custom brushes can be created, allowing for endless possibilities in creativity! Be expressive and don't worry about making mistakes!
